Leashed walks and trails
- County parks. Dogs are welcome in Loudoun County parks on a leash. The county’s facility pages point to section 612.13 of the county code, which requires a physical leash and the owner’s control, and section 1092.21, which bars dogs from athletic fields, spectator areas and the areas around them. That rules out the ball fields at Trailside, Edgar Tillett and Brambleton Community Park; the trails are fine.
- Bazil Newman Riverfront Park, Lansdowne. A nature trail along the Potomac, part of the Potomac Heritage National Scenic Trail, from the Riverpoint Drive Trailhead, 43942 Riverpoint Drive, with free parking and restrooms. The same leash rules apply.
- Bles Park, 44830 Bles Park Drive. A 94-acre passive area with trails along the Potomac River.
- Heron Overlook Park and Broadlands Boardwalk Park have short loops through wetlands; see our parks and trails guide.
- The W&OD Trail is a NOVA Parks trail; it is open 5 a.m. to 9 p.m. Keep dogs close on a busy multi-use path. Our walking and biking trails guide has the trailheads.
Dog events
- Halloween Bark Bash, One Loudoun. A dog costume contest, trick-or-treat trail and adoptable dogs from rescue groups on the plaza at 20626 Easthampton Plaza. The eighth was noon to 3 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 24, 2026; see our Halloween page.
- Doggy Pool Party, Ashburn Village. The association’s Mills Pool, 43895 Grottoes Drive, closed early on Sept. 19, 2026, for its end-of-season Doggy Pool Party for residents.
Licenses and the law
The Commonwealth of Virginia requires Loudoun County to license every dog 4 months and older. Licenses run with the dog’s rabies vaccination, for one, two or three years, at $10 per dog per year regardless of spay or neuter status. The tag is permanent and must be on the dog’s collar whenever it is off your property. The county notes that many dog parks require a license. Failing to license a dog is a Class IV misdemeanor with a fine of up to $250. Buy a license through the county’s dog license page.
Ashburn Village’s pool rules bar pets other than service animals from its pools and decks; the Doggy Pool Party is the exception. Other homeowners associations set their own rules.
What this means for you
For off-leash play, Potomac Green and Evermoore are the closest; Hanson is worth the drive for two separate dog areas. Keep a leash on everywhere else in county parks, stay off the ball fields, and make sure the license tag is on the collar. Related: parks and trails, free things to do and walking and biking trails.
