What is legal at home
The county fireworks page is clear:
- Legal: sparklers and ground-based fountains, bought from a stand with a Loudoun County Fire Marshal retail permit, used on private property.
- Illegal everywhere in Virginia: anything that rises into the air, explodes, travels along the ground or shoots projectiles. Possessing or using them is a Class 1 misdemeanor.
- When stands can sell: June 15 through July 15. The 2026 approved stand list (PDF) included five in Ashburn: Southern Walk Village Center, Farmwell Hunt Plaza, Ashburn Village Shopping Center, Ashburn Farms at 43330 Junction Plaza and Goose Creek Retail on Sycolin Road.
Safety rules from the Fire Marshal: wet the area first, keep onlookers 20 feet back and keep a hose or bucket nearby. Sparklers burn at more than 1,200 degrees, so supervise children. Never relight a dud; wait 20 minutes and treat it as spent. Soak used fireworks overnight in a metal container at least 15 feet from any building.
