Safety on the night

Most Ashburn trick-or-treating happens on subdivision streets and townhouse courts, many without sidewalks on both sides, and some cross busy roads such as Ashburn Village Boulevard, Claiborne Parkway and Waxpool Road.

  • Be seen. Sunset is about 6:11 p.m. and it is dark by 6:40. Give children flashlights or glow sticks and put reflective tape on costumes and bags.
  • Cross at corners and crosswalks, and stay on one side of the street when you can.
  • Drivers: slow down in neighborhoods between 5 and 9 p.m., watch for children darting between parked cars and enter and leave driveways slowly.
  • Check treats before children eat them and throw away anything unwrapped.
  • Mind the decorations. Keep candles and jack-o’-lanterns away from doorways, costumes and dry leaves; LED candles are safer.
  • Pets: keep them inside. The doorbell and costumes frighten many dogs.

If your porch light is off, most trick-or-treaters will pass you by.
