Ashburn is not a city, and Loudoun County does not offer trash or recycling collection. Curbside pickup in Ashburn comes from one of two places: your homeowners association, which hires a contractor for the whole community, or a private hauler you sign up with yourself. Most Ashburn neighborhoods are in an HOA, so start there.
Who to call
- Loudoun County Waste Management and landfill: 703-771-5500
- Trash hauler permits and complaints (Planning and Zoning): 703-777-0246, option 5
- Loudoun County Landfill: 21101 Evergreen Mills Road, Leesburg, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Saturday
- Ashburn Village trash (Republic Services): AVCAtrash@republicservices.com; bulk pickup 703-818-8222
- Curbside trash: your HOA office or your own hauler
Step 1: Ask your HOA
The county tells residents of an HOA to contact the association about pickup. The association picks the company, the days and the rules for cans.
Ashburn Village is one example. Its trash page says Republic Services is the contractor and sets this schedule:
| Service | Day |
|---|---|
| Trash | Monday and Thursday |
| Recycling (single stream) | Thursday |
| Yard waste | Monday, first Monday in March to the Monday before Dec. 24 |
| Large items | Monday or Thursday, by appointment at 703-818-8222 |
Cans can go to the curb after 5 p.m. the night before pickup and must come back in after collection. Republic charges a fee for each large item, such as furniture over 50 pounds or 4 feet long; the association lists it on its page. Yard waste goes in paper bags or a can marked “YARD DEBRIS ONLY,” up to 10 bags or bundles a week.
Other associations set their own days. Your HOA management office or welcome packet has them.
Step 2: No HOA service? Hire a permitted hauler
If your street has no association service, sign up directly with a company on the county’s list of permitted collectors. The current list (PDF), dated Oct. 29, 2025, shows which companies do residential curbside collection. Every permitted truck must show the company name and phone number on both sides and a decal for the current year. Permits expire March 31 each year.
“Major” collectors, with four or more trucks, must also offer recycling to residential customers. “Minor” collectors do not have to. Ask before you sign.
What goes in the recycling cart
The county’s curbside rules apply across Ashburn:
- Yes: aluminum and steel cans, foil, plastic bottles, jugs and jars, other #5 plastic containers, flattened cardboard, cereal and shoe boxes, newspapers, magazines, mail, office paper and paperback books.
- No: plastic bags of any kind, food waste, Styrofoam, paper plates and cups, clamshell containers, batteries, electronics, light bulbs, clothing and diapers.
- Glass: the county suggests a drop-off center instead of the cart.
Everything goes in loose, never bagged. Trash must be in a can with a tight lid and handles.
Drop-off centers near Ashburn
The county’s recycling drop-off centers are free and open daylight hours, seven days a week. They take cans, #1, #2 and #5 plastic bottles and jars, cartons, paper and flattened cardboard, with glass in a separate bin. Anything left outside the containers counts as illegal dumping.
- One Loudoun Glass Recycling Center, 20360 Savin Hill Drive, Ashburn. Glass bottles and jars only.
- Sterling Recycling Center, 46279 West Juniper Ave., Sterling. Now open at its new location.
- Loudoun County Landfill Recycling Center, at the landfill.
The county landfill
The Loudoun County Landfill, 21101 Evergreen Mills Road in Leesburg, takes waste from Loudoun County only. It is open 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Saturday; the main gate closes at 4 p.m. Disposal is charged by the ton with a minimum per vehicle, and the FastTrash lane takes up to 10 bags of household trash for a flat fee. Refrigerators, tires and propane tanks carry extra charges. The full fee table is on the county page.
Leaves and grass go in paper bags, not plastic. Tires come from households only, four a day. Free mulch and compost are by the entrance road; bring a shovel.

Hazardous waste and Christmas trees
Paint thinner, gasoline, pool chemicals, pesticides and household batteries go to a household hazardous waste event, not the trash. The last one of 2026 is Saturday, Nov. 14, 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., at Claude Moore Park, 46150 Loudoun Park Lane in Sterling (drive to the end of the road). The limit is 15 gallons of liquids and 40 pounds of solids per household; bring proof you live in Loudoun County.
After Christmas, the county takes trees at drop-off sites including Claude Moore Park and turns them into free mulch. The 2025 season ran Dec. 26 to Jan. 20. Remove every ornament, light and stand, and no bags.
